[Pre-ARR] Early years
Ethel does not retain any memories of her distant childhood. A blank canvas and many questions… Sometime in her dreams, she can glimpse a blurry image of a high, snowy peak. A very loose clue, a guess she might’ve grown up in Skattay. A bnnuy without roots, until a very peculiar visit in her hospital chamber during her recovery.A kin of sun hair, holding the answers she sought. Both hails from one of the highest veena villages in the Skattay range, Ymir. A place of frigid cold and almost permanent snow, giving birth to a peculiar lineage with short furred legs and perfect coloration to blend in and hunt in the white landscape. By the miracle of somanoutics and a bit of high-tech tinkering, the stranger named Setharial had the revelation this familiar face was half-sister of his. Both their father was the oldest woodwarden knew from the village. So old, in fact, his name was even forgotten by him and only referred as elder Ymir. And so, by her uncanny similar features, he could reveal Ethel who is her mother. Yggred, the late village’s matriarch.By her ascendancy, Ethel’s remarkable resilience found a start of explanation. But also bears a terrible curse. For veena’s life expectancy can reach quite above half a millennia, one of a matriarch’s lineage can live even longer… But she also gained the certitude she is not alone out there.
[pre-ARR] Chains of Aldenard
Flickering recollection is perhaps for the best… Ethel’s arrival in Aldenald was in a cage, to be sold in Ul’dha slave market. Her appearance and features made her a pricey addition in any rich man's harem, and so started her long march in the seven hells. Used as a tool for lust she rarely missed to attract, her defencelessness was too alluring for the worst of man’s wickedness. A distracting object to torture, a bargaining tool in the cynical chess play among the city’s wealthy above all laws: the monetarists.
A thousand lashes

She saw many sisters of misfortune be brought then discarded as age started to wither their charms, something she couldn’t expect to free her from her coil. They took her freedom, dignity, but worst of all… Her voice. One owner of hers, tired of her weeping, had her vocal chords removed. Her health too was robbed, as lashes and torture tools bite her flesh for lasting damages, her mind assailed by drugs. Stripped of her humanity, came a time she simply didn’t reacted anymore to pain… No relief came in these sixty long years of servitude, away from the Gods’ eyes.
[1.0] Shrouded in snow
Calamity caused many distresses and hard time for most, merely and annoyance for the richest in their ivory towers. However, budget cuts was in order… What to do about a low-value slave? Simple, throwing it away. Even better in a deadly situation for one last laugh, for instance in the Coearthian blizzard flocking with wolves. And such was her fate during a business trip of her late owner, left naked and beaten in the snow. She desperately tried to find shelter, in vain. Only as she was about to collapse, her body frost-bitten, she saw a fire light from a cave. But instead of help, only cold steel welcomed her. A wary man in strange armor adorned with spikes, speaking of her as alien or heretic. She tried to plea her cause in the very limited capacity she had, but only collapsed near the fireplace. Would death set her free? It was her last thought before awaking in the comfort of a warm bed in a modest house in the Holy City of Ishgard. The dragoon knight she met in the mountain had dumped her on the doorstep of his mentor, a retired hyur veteran by the name of Yvain Belami. The man was internally boiling from the veena’s state and sworn to see her back to health. Regardless of the rumors to take a stranger woman in his abode, he spent much time and energy to give her back slivers humanity. Teaching her to read and write to communicate with a slate and chalk stick, behaving like a proper citizen, even giving her a name. Ethel, borrowed from a small now frozen stream he used to fish. Never he touched her, giving instead the warmth of a friend, mentor, and the closest she could ever recollect of family.
[ARR to end HW] The Unsung Spears
Alas, Isghard was facing its direst hour in the millennia old war against the dragons. No effort could be spared to keep the heretics and the archenemy Nidhogg's brood away from the Holy City. Templier and knights order were stretched thin, in urgent need of fresh arms… And so, a morning, a pair of soldiers knocked at Yvain’s door. It was fairly known he hosted a stranger, now requisitioned to fight or be expelled. Despite his protests, Ethel was taken in the templier retinues, and called to serve in the rear-line auxiliaries.Once again, fate proved to be the cruellest master. The dragoon she owned rude rescue spotting her on the training ground and decided to beat some sense in this stranger, perhaps out of jealousy or just plain pettiness. To his displeasure, the basics taught by Yvain and her strong affinity to wind aether allowed her to resist few blow… And made the dragon's relic he carried react. Turned out the poor excuse of a woman was compatible in a time of need, and so brought in the Azure Dragoon order despite being a stranger. However, she'd never be recognized as an equal nor equipped with a dragon blooded armor.Instead, she was sent with the other aliens, outcasts and misfits conscripted like her. More than a hundred souls left with little choice than dying alone, or together for the Holy City with distant promise of amnesty or citizenship if they ever managed to survive long enough. Only the most dangerous missions were given to those Unsung Spears, deep strikes in enemy-held territories, ambush, assassinations… By owning a job crystal, Ethel was put in as a lieutenant, with the difficult mission to keep in check the other crystal wielders of sinister reputation. Dark knights, tempering with the same energy than the hated demons summoned by heretics. She saw the horrors of war, people once brothers tearing each other apart, innocents slaughtered. Worst was the massacre of Gargogne, Yvain’s birthplace ; even today the unspeakable horrors seep in her nightmares. But she also found slivers of relief in the camaraderie from fellow brothers and sisters in arms, while other made her days -and nights- true ordeals.Far from this harsh reality, denizens who glimpsed at the white and silent dragoon shrouded by snow started to speak of the Snow Hare, telling their children about this strange but benevolent guardian punishing Isghard’s foes in the blizzard. A tale was born, fragment of hope given in dark hours. Something she couldn’t be aware of.All ended in the last days of the Dragonsong War, when a returned Nidhogg darkened the sky with his brood to scorch the Holy City. Trying to reach collapsing defence lines after a deployment in Dravania, the Unsung Spears’ company aircraft was attacked by a splinter wing of ebony dragons. Crashing in the highlands, many were killed on the spot… alongside the leader and most of the veterans. Ethel made it, although injured, only to realize command befell on her shoulder.Surrounded, cut from any allies, she had to give the worst and only order she never gave. She asked them to die here, taking with them as much winged fiend as possible to relieve the Holy City defenders. And thus the Spears were shattered, unsung valor and bravery with only the tainted snow to remember. For a time, they held thigh, the wreck of their airship makeshift bastion. Until a massive dragon came to end it all, engaging Ethel… A fight she knew she couldn't win. With all her remaining strength she aimed for the beast’s heart, but failed to deal the killing blow. Both fighters fell from the steep cliff, plunging to their death far from the slaughter.

The weight of survival
[post HW to EW] A slow decline
Her body broken once more, she welcomed her final rest in cold and silence. But it was once more to be denied by her precious friend, finding her lying against the slain dragon, armor pierced by one of his claws. For long, she wasn't sure how exactly she survived. The few clues she glimpsed years later left her with more questions than answers. She was mended in the walls of the Holy City, this time with consideration from her order. Peace finally came to Isghard, and winds of change… She wept for all those lost before being able to see their sacrifice bear fruits. Her crystal lost, her strength diminished, she earned to retire as a full citizen and learn how to live as such.In need to make a living, she took on clothcraft for one of the Crozier’s guilds, diligently learning. Content with a low-profile and modest life, she found small happiness for the first time, taking up house duty the evenings in the abode shared with an aging Yvain. Slowly she saw years gnawing away his strengths where countless battle failed to do so. An heartbreak for the veena, with the unavoidable issue she refused to acknowledge. The ageless lady hid him her own woes. Year by year, her own body weakened, her senses dulled to the point only permanent cold inhabited her. A stigmata from the war perhaps, but also the gruesome state of her back as permanent reminder of her time in Ul’dha. Fighting for the City only accelerated the process of her decline, now catching on her.And then the dreaded time to say farewell to Yvain came, the old man making her promise to live on and search for happiness. But it was too much for the grieving veena. Despite the last benevolence of giving her a small house in the Firmament as legacy, Ethel remained inconsolable for months. Despite her efforts, the abode always felt empty of any presence she needed so much…Slowly but surely as year passed by, the lady tried to make up to her promise, visiting the other city states and venues to make connections. Even establishing herself as independent weaver, now capable enough to serve a clientele of workers, even nobles up to Sky pirates praising the sturdiness of her garb. She made friends by many trials and errors, even started to feel her heart race for someone... but despite elaborated potions, her state turned to the worst. Where lashes and battles failed, the slow leak of her aether was killing her.
[mid EW] Cur[s]e - At Death's grasp
Ethel’s very small world crumbled away in a matter of months. Her waning aether preventing her to quit Ishgard then soon her very abode, the very capacity to walk slowly gnawed away. Cut from her friends, the rare visits were only temporarily relief from her growing despair. Her sentimental life only gave more wounds, all previous attempts to grow closer ending up in being toyed with or, at the end, being out-rightly rejected.Solace came too late, her feelings trampled in Ser Vaindreau's Grace‘s hospital, awaited a distant and uncertain transfer to Sharlayan. There, in perhaps the Star's most advanced medical facility, plans were made to recreate a centuries-old remedy to save her now miserable life. By the time she could finally make the travel in company of her friend and benefactor Ser Vorst, she was no more than a shadow of herself, barely able to move. The hardship to find the remedy’s ingredients and the hopelessness of her feelings achieved to break her body and mind and was plunged in artificial coma to slow down Death’s approach.Hopefully, the many blades and friends scouring the world to get the precious material succeeded, each pill made restoring further her aether circulation. Alas, gashing wounds of her mind were harder to tackle, Ethel having lost her will to live, her capacity to hope and dream. The many visits didn’t help much at first, until she finally accepted the idea to live on, for the sake of others if not her. She even gained in the process a new voice in the form of an Allag-altered choker, and a fleeting feeling of belonging. Still, she had a long way to go to recover from the marks this last ordeal left.

An home lost, memories turned to ashes

Ethel took several weeks to cope with the loss of her departed mentor's last gift. The couple's lush cocoon of serenity was no more... Despite fair gil compensation, some things were simply irreplaceable. Yet, the most pressing matter was to find shelter. Thankfully, Kisne started to work few months priors for well-established free company, and sought assistance there. In this trying time, the gentleness and consideration offered helped the couple, but most of all Ethel. The leader offered a portion of the company hall's attic for them to live as long as necessary, making sure to make the place decent. An honest work was even offered to the ladybun left without stable earning with the destruction of her cloth craft tools. Aware of Ethel's training, "the Madame" took her in trial as a scout for her hunting troupe. And so, encouraged by her love, the ladybun put all her efforts in her dancing arts. Until her master considered her ready to make her debut as an initiate... Albeit the show went close to a very embarrassing one for Ethel, she passed. As a parting gift, the viera was entrusted with a soul crystal to make further steps on the Kriegstanz' path. The wearer let place to the adventurer, right in time for a big event shaking Eorzea ; trade routes for the western continent of Tural were about to open, bearing promise of a New World full of discoveries and riches.

[early DT] Thus springs Fontana
Growing comfortable in her new life and modest home in the attic, Ethel diligently trained her steps as an apprentice hunter. Deployed as scouts in the Turali wild, her and Kisne turned out as a reliable team, if not perhaps too keen to take a day off by a hotspring. Hardships awaited the mute though, as brief engagement with local fauna then a spar put stark light on her own limitation. She didn't had time to brood much though, as a certain viera invited her one night by the Lomisan venue they met for the first time.
The proposal

The oblivious viera remained completely wordless to his proposal, causing him a brief fright. Her dive for a hug making them roll on the grass was however a satisfying -albeit cloth-staining- answer !
Exchanging vows in front of the Twelve gave them much to think, including a name to share and give to their desired children. Once more, Kisne proved resourceful, suggesting a borrowing from Werlytian language. As a memento from their time there and honoring their shared love for bathing, they would be know as Fontana. The ceremony was held in presence of colleagues and friends, surprising the couple with a quite memorable after-party. For those once acquaintanced with a sickly mute, the transformation she knew in the past few years was an heartwarming sight.
Blessed day

Blessings came in series for the newlyweds. After many unfruitful attempts to buy a plot of land in Gridania, luck (or perhaps someone pulling strings in the background) was on their side. A small area for their taking, conveniently close to the hunter guild employing them ! They didn't lost time, eager to build together their love burrow. As soon the walls were raised, they started the interior design. Of course, the room they spend the most on was... the bathroom, looking closest to an interior onsen !All the extra space compared to the attic they rented also gave her some ideas about starting family, but they decided to wait further, time to make enough savings and ensure their already loved little one wouldn't lack anything.
[DT] Crossroads
By all means, Ethel never knew this degree of happiness before, making her very thoughtful of nurturing her bonds. Alas for her, her eagerness to prove herself useful for the company employing her backfired. The snow veena was utterly crushed in a spar against another dancer, in a way making her feel the pointlessness of her training. In short succession, she accumulated what looked like small failures, but definitively eroded her nascent self-esteem. Until it became too much for her to bear, and the couple took the decision to retreat from active duties. Instead, she took on managing tasks within the company, while Kisne embraced his old magiteck love by running the workshop full of troublesome mammets. For now, she would put down her chakrams in a rack alongside the spear, unsure she'd ever use them again.Even harder was the separation with her beloved, dispatched one month away for an important task in Tural. Each day felt a moon for the bonded vieras. As much their reuniting was sweet, this trial made them swear to avoid any other occurrence at all cost. All those events made them reconsider their family project... But as much she wished to, the snow veena's was questioning her ability to nurture life. The medics soon confirmed how slim chances were due to her past wounds, dealing heavy blow to her moral.Be it by the invisible hands of the Twelve or simply the unconsidered factor of her husband, the grim prediction was proved wrong in mere weeks after they started trying for child. At first, she brushed away the early signs, refusing to give on false hope. It tooks couple baffled healers to finally make certain the good news : she was expecting. Nothing, even the aether complications and worrisome traces detected within her body managed to cover the future parent's joy.

A dream worth fighting for

Her pregnancy once more shifted the couple's priority and questioned their choices of life. Both were quite content with a life far from dangers, their eagerness to be parents barely outmatching their worries against this new challenge. As much as they could, they worked harder to save any possible gil, but kept moments to spend together. In fact, their boss had to remind the couple every so often their workplace were in different rooms !As moons passed, the less glamorous parts of pregnancy caught on the bnnuy, finding herself increasingly short of sleep, with killing back pain and increasing mood changes. Yet, not even once her husband complained, growing ever more -if not too much- supporting to his expecting wife. Sometimes, she had to remind him profusely she could still manage some tasks and didn't need an over-exhausted man at home. More often than not though, she only had to look at him to get cuddles and comfort.
A sweet team

As the day they could finally hold their firstborn in their arms closed by, the future parents had lot to consider. A fitting name busied many of their nights, only to come quite unexpectedly during a rainy afternoon. Their baby will go by Reina, at least until their age of coming. Then came the place and safety for a little one in their burrow, forcing them to redraw and extend their home. Finally, the environment. Seeing Ethel increasingly insecure at her work, Kisne's gentle pushes to speak her mind resulted of their common decision to leave the company. Despite the poor timing for their resources, the easing burden on the expecting mother's mind comforted him it was the best course of action.Tending to a little one would sure keep her at home fully for moons at first, something she'll gladly do. Yet, after that, the viera start to wonder again what new horizons she could explore, be it as an artisan or, perhaps, trying again to live from her steps.
