Sixth Astral Era - circa 1495-?? : Early years
Ethel does not retain any memories of her distant childhood. A blank canvas and many questions… Sometime in her dreams, she can glimpse a blurry image of a high, snowy peak. A very loose clue making her guess she might’ve grown up in Skattay. A bnnuy without clear roots, until a very peculiar visit in her hospital chamber during her recovery.A kin of sun hair recognized her features. He spoke of a village, high perched in the Skattay's range. Ymir. A place of frigid cold and almost permanent snow, giving birth to a peculiar lineage with short furred legs and perfect coloration to blend in and hunt in the white landscape. By the miracle of medical magiteck, the stranger saw his intuition right : they shared the same sire. An ancient, if not the oldest wood-warder knew from the village. Her appearance, however, was strikingly akin her mother he knew all too well : Yggred, the late village’s matriarch. This ascendancy asserted brought her a semblance of belonging, even if fleeting. The blood running in her veins played its part in her resilience to what almost killed her. Yet, it also carries a curse. A viera's time on the Star can span centuries, even more so for those of matriarch's lineage. This realization grew heavy on her at that time, but came with the knowledge she isn't alone in this.
Sixth Astral Era - ?? to the Calamity: Chains of Aldenard
[Warning : dark themes ahead]
Faded memories can sometimes be for the best. As much as she can tell, Ethel’s arrival in Eorzea was as a captive. She was sold in Ul’dah underworld' slave market, her appearance making her a prized addition in any rich man's harem. And so started her long march in the Seven Hells. Used as a tool for lust she rarely missed to attract, her defencelessness was too alluring for those giving in their vilest instincts. She was in turn a distracting torture subject, a prize, a bargaining good in the cynical influence game among the wealthiest above all laws: the monetarists.
A thousand lashes

She saw many sisters of misfortune be brought then discarded as age started to wither their charms. A sad end, but a end nonetheless she couldn’t expect to free her from sufferings. They took her freedom, stripped her from human dignity, but worst of all… Stole her voice. One of her owner, tired of her weeping, had her vocal chords removed. Mistreatment eroded her health too, her body tormented by lashes and sinister torture devices, her mind assailed by drugs. Utterly broken, came a time she simply didn’t reacted anymore to pain… No relief came for her in six decades of servitude.
Seventh Umbral Era - year 5 : Shrouded in snow
The Calamity caused untold destruction and sufferings, making the life of many an everyday struggle. The richest who survived, however, felt merely an annoyance in their comfortable ivory towers. Yet, with the destabilized economy, budget cuts was in order… What to do about a low-value slave? Simple, throwing it away. Even better ; in a deadly situation for one last laugh, for instance in the Coearthian blizzard teeming with wolves. And such was her fate during a business trip of her last owner, left naked and beaten in the snow. Yet, something pushed her to stand. Was it primordial survival instinct? The first time she experienced freedom? She'll never know. The strength of despair rapidly burned as she tried find shelter. Only when she was about to collapse from frostbites and exhaustion she saw a fire light coming from a cave. Help, finally !But instead of assistance, only cold steel of a spear welcomed her. It was held by a wary man in strange armor adorned with spikes, speaking harshly a language she couldn't understand. She tried to plea her cause in the very limited capacity she had, but only collapsed near the fireplace. Would death set her free? It was her last thought before darkness engulfed her. She was half-right. Death didn't came, but freedom took shape of a warm bed in a modest house within the Holy City of Ishgard. The dragoon knight she met in the mountain had dumped her on the doorstep of his mentor, a retired hyur veteran by the name of Yvain Belami. The man was internally raging from her tortured state, anathema of his sense of justice and compassion. He sworn in front of his goddess Halone to see her back to health. He worked relentlessly to keep his words, dismissing petty rumors about him taking a stranger woman in his abode. Day after day, moon after moon he gave his time and energy cobbling back together her shattered pieces of humanity. Things as simple as enjoying a warm meal and clean cloth, to not cower in fear when he approached...He taught her his language, how to read and write to communicate with a slate and chalk stick. With a lot of patience too accompanying her outside to fight her fears, and learn how to behave like a proper citizen. He even bestowed her a name, for she couldn't recollect any. Ethel, borrowed from a small river he used to fish in, now permanently frozen. He never laid a hand on her, something she would've agree on ; she had nothing else to offer, or so she believed at that time. Instead, he gave her the warmth of a friend, mentor, and the closest she could recollect of family.
Seventh Astral Era - from ARR to Heavensward events : The Unsung Spears
Alas, Isghard was facing its direst hour in the millennia old war against the dragons. No effort could be spared to keep the heretics and the archenemy Nidhogg's brood away from the Holy City. Templier and knights order were stretched thin, in urgent need of fresh arms… And so, a morning, a pair of soldiers knocked at Yvain’s door. It was fairly known he hosted a stranger, now requisitioned to fight or be expelled. Despite his protests, Ethel was taken in the templier retinues, and called to serve in the rear-line auxiliaries.Once again, fate was against her. The dragoon she owned a rude rescue spotting her on the training ground. Perhaps out of jealousy or plain pettiness, he decided to spar with her and beat some sense in this stranger. To his displeasure, the basics taught by Yvain and her strong affinity to wind aether allowed her to resist few blow… And made the draconic relic he carried react. Turned out the poor excuse of a woman was compatible in a time of need, and so brought in the Azure Dragoon order despite being a stranger. However, she'd never be recognized as an equal nor equipped with a dragon blooded armor.Instead, she was sent with the other aliens, outcasts and misfits conscripted like her. More than a hundred souls left with little choice than dying for the Holy City with distant promise of amnesty or citizenship if they ever managed to survive long enough. Only the most dangerous missions were given to those Unsung Spears, deep strikes in enemy-held territories, ambush, assassinations… By holding a job crystal, Ethel was put in as a lieutenant, with the difficult mission to keep in check the other crystal wielders of sinister reputation. Dark knights, said to be tempering with the same energy than the hated demons summoned by heretics. She saw the horrors of war, people once brothers tearing each other apart, innocents slaughtered. Worst was the massacre of Gargogne, Yvain’s birthplace ; even today the unspeakable horrors seep in her nightmares. But she also found slivers of relief in the camaraderie from fellow brothers and sisters in arms, while other made her days -and nights - true ordeals.Far from this harsh reality, denizens who glimpsed at the white and silent dragoon shrouded by snow started to speak of the Snow Hare. Unknowingly, she inspired children tales of a strange but benevolent guardian punishing Isghard’s foes in the blizzard. All ended in the last days of the Dragonsong War, when a returned Nidhogg darkened the sky with his brood to scorch the Holy City. Trying to reach collapsing defence lines after a deployment in Dravania, the Unsung Spears’ company aircraft was attacked by a splinter wing of ebony dragons. Crashing in the highlands, many were killed on the spot… alongside the leader and most of the veterans. Ethel made it, although injured, only to realize command befell on her shoulder.Surrounded, cut from any allies, she had to give the worst and only order she never gave. She asked them to die here, taking with them as much winged fiend as possible to relieve the Holy City defenders. And thus the Spears were shattered, unsung valor and bravery with only the tainted snow to remember. For a time, they held thigh, the wreck of their airship makeshift bastion. Until a massive dragon came to end it all, engaging Ethel… A fight she knew she couldn't win. With all her remaining strength she aimed for the beast’s heart, but failed to deal the killing blow. Both fighters fell from the steep cliff, plunging to their death far from the slaughter.

The weight of survival
Seventh Astral Era - after Heavensward up to Endwalker events : A slow decline
Her body broken once more, she welcomed her final rest in cold and silence. But it was once more to be denied by her precious friend, finding her lying against the slain dragon, armor pierced by one of his claws. For long, she wasn't sure how exactly she survived. The few clues she glimpsed years later left her with more questions than answers. She recovered in the walls of the Holy City, this time with consideration from those she fought to protect. Peace finally came to Isghard, and winds of change… She wept for all those lost before being able to see their sacrifice bear fruits. Her crystal lost, her strength diminished, she earned to retire as a full citizen. Survivor guilt was another burden on her fragile mind, but could still rely on her mentor to help her carry on.To earn a living, she took on clothcraft for one of the Crozier’s guilds, diligently learning. Content with a low-profile and modest life as clerk, she found small happiness for the first time, taking up house duty the evenings in the abode shared with an aging Yvain. Slowly she saw years gnawing away his strengths where countless battle failed to do so. An heartbreak for the veena, with the unavoidable issue she refused to acknowledge. The ageless lady hid him her own woes. Year by year, her own body weakened, her senses dulled to the point only permanent cold inhabited her. A stigmata from the war perhaps, but also the gruesome state of her back as permanent reminder of her time in Ul’dah. Fighting for the City only accelerated the process of her decline, now catching up on her. Then came the dreaded time to say farewell to Yvain the old man making her promise to live on and search for happiness. But it was too much for the grieving veena. Despite the last benevolence of giving her a small house in the Firmament as legacy, Ethel remained inconsolable for moons. Despite her efforts, the gifted abode always felt empty of any presence she needed so much…Slowly but surely as years passed by, the lady tried to make up to her promise, visiting the other city states and venues to make connections. She even establishing herself as independent weaver, allowing her to spare her dwindling health. Her hands were still capable, and she served a clientele of workers, even nobles up to Sky pirates praising the sturdiness of her garb. She made friends by many trials and errors, even started to feel her heart race for someone... but despite elaborated potions, time was running out. Where lashes and battles failed, the slow leak of her aether was killing her.
Seventh Astral Era - after Endwalker events : Cur[s]e, at Death's grasp
Ethel’s very small world crumbled away in a matter of months. Her waning aether preventing her to quit Ishgard then soon her abode, the very capacity to walk slowly gnawed away. Cut from her friends, the rare visits were only temporarily relief from her growing despair.Solace came too late, her confessed feelings to a friend trampled in Ser Vaindreau's Grace‘s hospital. Little of her remained when she was transferred to Sharlayan. There, in perhaps the Star's most advanced medical facility, plans were made to recreate a centuries-old remedy to save her now miserable life. Gathering the ingredients was taking time she hardly had, especially with her hopelessness making her renounce to fight. In a last ditch effort, the sage monitoring her case to put her in artificial coma she hoped never waking up from.Hopefully, the many blades and friends scouring the world to get the precious material succeeded, each pill made restoring further her aether circulation until reaching a complete regeneration. Alas, gashing wounds of her mind were harder to tackle, the viera's ordeals leaving her in pieces once more. The many visits made her slowly accept the idea of living on, for the sake of others if not her. She even gained in the process a new voice in the form of a modified Allagan choker, and a fleeting feeling of belonging. Still, recovery would be a long road...

Once confessed, his affection had no bounds, and so the care and patience as the bnnuy struggles with the lasting effects of her past. Ethel took several weeks to cope with the loss of her departed mentor's last gift. Despite fair gil compensation, some things were simply irreplaceable. Yet, the most pressing matter was to find shelter. Thankfully, Kisne started to work few months priors for well-established free company, and sought assistance there. In this trying time, the gentleness and consideration offered helped the couple, but most of all Ethel. They were offered a portion of the company hall's attic for them to live as long as necessary, making sure to make the place decent. An honest work was provided to her, making up for the destruction of her cloth craft tools. Aware of Ethel's past training, "the Madame" took her in trial as a scout for her hunting troupe. And so, encouraged by her love, the ladybun put all her efforts training her martial dancing arts. Soon, her master put her on the ultimate test of making her debut as an initiate... Albeit the show went close to a very embarrassing one for Ethel, she charmed the attendance enough to pass. As parting gift, she received a soul crystal to continue learning the Kriegstanz' path. The wearer let place to the adventurer, right in time for a big event shaking Eorzea ; trade routes for the western continent of Tural were about to open, bearing promise of discoveries and riches.

Seventh Astral Era - Dawntrails events : Thus springs Fontana
Growing comfortable in her new life and modest home in the attic, Ethel diligently trained her steps as an apprentice hunter. Deployed as scouts in the Turali wild, her and Kisne turned out as a reliable team, if not perhaps too keen to take a day off by any hotspring. Trying moments forced her yet to see her still harsh limitations, feeding the self-doubt that never completely left her. She didn't had time to brood much though, as a certain viera invited her one night by the Lomisan venue they met for the first time.
The proposal

The oblivious viera remained completely wordless to his proposal, causing him a moment of dread. Her diving hug was however a positive -albeit cloth-staining- answer !Exchanging vows in front of the Twelve gave them much to think, including a name to share and give to their desired children. Once more, Kisne proved resourceful, suggesting a borrowing from Werlytian language. As a memento from their time there and honoring their shared love for waters, they would be know as Fontana. The ceremony was held in presence of colleagues and friends, surprising the couple with a quite memorable after-party. For those once who once knew a sickly and sad mute, her genuine smile an heartwarming sight.
Blessed day

Blessings came in series for the newlyweds. After many unfruitful attempts to buy a plot of land in the Shroud, luck was on their side. They didn't lost time, eager to build together their love burrow. As soon the walls were raised, they started the interior design. Without much surprise, the couple didn't count the spending on the bathroom, looking closest to an interior onsen !All the extra space compared to the attic gave them renewed ideas about starting family. It will have to wait still, the time to make enough savings to dote on a little one.
Seventh Astral Era - post Dawntrails events : Another kind of adventure
Ethel was happy like never before, but had still to battle her inner demons. Her eagerness to prove useful born from insecurity was her undoing. From mission drawbacks to humiliating defeats from spars, her efforts and training felt pointless. It was too much for her barely nascent self-esteem, turning once more to self-loathing despite her husband's attempts to cheer her on. The couple retreated from active duties, taking on support roles within the company. The snow veena stored her chakrams on a rack alongside the spear, unsure she'd ever use them again.Even harder was the separation with her beloved, dispatched one month away for an important task in Tural. Each day felt a moon for the bonded vieras. As much their reuniting was sweet, this trial made them swear to avoid any other occurrence at all cost. All those events made them reconsider seriously starting a family. But as much she wished to, the snow veena's was questioning her ability to nurture life. The medics soon confirmed how slim chances were due to her past wounds, dealing heavy blow to her moral.Be it by the invisible hands of the Twelve or simply the unconsidered factor of her husband, the grim prediction was proved wrong in mere weeks after they started trying for child. At first, she brushed away the early signs, refusing to give on false hope. It tooks couple baffled healers to finally make certain the good news : she was expecting. Nothing, even the aether complications and worrisome traces detected within her body managed to dim the future parents' glee.

A dream worth fighting for

Her pregnancy once more shifted the couple's priorities and questioned their life choices. Both were quite content with a life far from dangers, their eagerness to be parents barely outmatching their worries of being up to that challenge. As much as they could, they worked harder to save any possible gil, but kept moments to spend together. As moons passed, the less glamorous parts of pregnancy caught on the bnnuy, finding herself increasingly short of sleep, with killing back pain and increasing mood changes. Yet, not even once her husband complained, growing ever more supporting for his expecting wife.
A sweet team

As the day they could finally hold their firstborn in their arms closed by, the future parents had lot to consider. First, deciding on a fitting name busied many of their nights, only to come quite unexpectedly during a rainy afternoon. Their baby will go by Reina, at least until their age of coming. Then came the place and safety for a little one in their burrow, forcing them to redraw and extend their home. Finally, the environment. Seeing Ethel increasingly insecure at her work, Kisne's gentle pushes to speak her mind resulted of their common decision to leave the company. Despite the poor timing for their resources, the easing burden on the expecting mother's mind comforted him it was the best course of action.Reina's birth went without incident, to an anxious father's utter relief. Given her past hardships, it still left Ethel weakened for moons... Which the short nights didn't help either. All long last they could hold their firstborn of ashen hair, filling their hearth with wordless joy.

A tale of three

Seventh Astral Era - post Dawntrails events : Ancient gale
Their new life as "young" parents is a challenge they manage surprisingly fine. A lot of trial and errors of course, but made easier by the strength of their bond. Reina also proving to be a very easy and gleeful baby, making a smile erase the worries she gives the couple.Their relatively quiet family routine was then disturbed, quietly at first. Ethel experienced restless nights, unable to remember anything but fright and an emerald gaze. Then, Kisne noticed strange lights in the house by the dead of night. If a trip outside the Shroud calmed his wife's condition, their return made it all worst... Pushing them to find help as her health dwindled.Hosted by their good friend and Reina's godsmother Liliana, they reached a specialist in occult matters. Thanks to her and /direct/ approach, Ethel got answers... And even more questions. She is marked by an old vieran sigil, binding to her an high wind spirit like any other. It seemed protective to her during the initial confrontation, but hostile to anyone else. The snow veena was assailed by visions she has yet to make full sense of.Hoping for a way to unbind herself and understand what led to this, Ethel seems determined learning more about magick and her kin... To be continued !
